Y Generation Coaching?

Coaching in team sports has changed dramatically. The emphasis is now on dialogue, of constantly explaining and rationalizing your decisions, of positive reinforcement and nurturing. Young players now respond to positive messages and being made to feel valued, rather than being aggressively challenged about their performance.

Sport is not their life, most now have other interests and they genuinely dislike command and control coaching. They can be very high performance, high maintenance individuals and they need and want direction, however they are not backward in expressing their opinions.

One example of Y Generation behaviour in sport is that of Australian fast bowler Brett Lee and his tantrum to Australian Test Captain Ricky Ponting when he wasn’t bowled when he thought he should have been used on the fourth day of the Second Test in India. I wonder what Ian Chappell would have said to his fast bowler in the same circumstance?
